What Happens If You Don't Pay A Speeding Ticket?

These days it seems everyone is busier than ever. Perhaps that's why the number of speeding tickets issued goes up every year.

Want to know what else keeps going up every year? Speeding tickets that result in driver license suspensions.

Continuing the Q and A, I've got one more question for you. Want to know what happens if you don't pay a speeding ticket? You guessed it, your driver's license will be suspended.

"So what" you say, "It's no big deal" you continue.

Please allow me to set you straight. In all my years of helping people with their traffic ticket related issues, one of the biggest shocks for people is when they discover what can happen when a "simple" traffic ticket gets ignored and how quickly it turns into a "major" problem.

When you receive a traffic ticket in Florida, you are given 30 days to decide what to do. Once you know your options, it's a pretty easy decision. For most people, the best choice is to fight the ticket. The worst choice and the choice that is not even listed is to DO NOTHING. Because by doing nothing, the state will suspend your license, which can cause you to get arrested and thrown in jail.

Yes, you read that correctly. Not paying a speeding ticket will result in your driver's license being suspended. This means, the next time you get stopped by the police (for any reason), you can get thrown in jail. In addition to being thrown in jail (and feeling like an idiot that you let something so silly like an unpaid speeding ticket land you in jail), you will receive a criminal ticket for "driving on a suspended license".

See how quickly things are getting out of control? One minute you are driving on your way to a job interview, you get pulled over because your brake light stopped working (remember, it doesn't matter what the officer stops you for) and as soon as the officer runs your license, you can forget about that job interview and start thinking of your one phone call. You're headed to the "big house," all because you didn't pay or fight that speeding ticket.

"This can't be happening," you start saying to yourself. Unfortunately, it is happening. It's happening thousands of times a year in South Florida. Don't let it happen to you.

Do yourself a favor. The next time you get a speeding ticket, don't ignore it.
